Why a Shopify store becomes slow—and what to fix first
A priority order for improving storefront speed without damaging merchandising.
Shopify performance problems usually accumulate through oversized media, duplicated tracking scripts, theme customisation and apps that continue loading after their value has disappeared. Effective optimisation starts with evidence and protects the shopping experience.
Measure important templates
Test the homepage, collection, product and cart journeys separately on mobile. One strong score can hide a slow product template. Record the largest content element, interaction delay and layout movement before making changes.
Optimise commercial imagery
Serve correctly sized product and banner images, use modern formats and avoid loading every carousel slide immediately. Keep enough image quality to support buying confidence while preventing desktop assets from overwhelming mobile connections.
Audit applications and scripts
List every installed app, theme extension, pixel and customer-support tool. Remove abandoned integrations and delay scripts that do not contribute to the first interaction. Uninstalling an app may not remove every theme fragment, so review the generated storefront code.
Protect conversion while simplifying
Performance work should not remove size guides, product evidence or useful recommendations merely to improve a score. Test revenue-related journeys after each change and choose lighter implementations for the elements customers genuinely use.
